About Dana Weir

Artist Statement

“As I explore the process of making images, I find that I am also exploring the construction of the spiritual self. When engaged in art making, I find I am encountering the world through a sense of wonder and a concern for contrasts. I am inspired by the tensions between permanence and fragility, wilderness and wasteland, beauty and decay. I enjoy searching for unity among a collection of broken and forgotten things.”  —Dana Weir

Bio

Dana’s work has been exhibited in many invitational and juried shows in Oregon and Washington, most recently at the Northwind Arts Center and the  PTSA Downtown Gallery in Port Townsend. Dana lives in Port Townsend, making art and teaching art to students of all ages.

Dana’s formal education reflects her diverse interests and passions. She completed her BA in Art at Pacific University in 2001, and then obtained a master’s degree from Marylhurst University in 2005. Her Master’s degree was interdisciplinary, focusing on Spiritual Traditions and Ethics. Dana is fascinated by the way in which artists from various cultures represent spiritual experience.

Dana spent nine years in Portland, Oregon, working as a nanny, preschool teacher, and art instructor. She taught a wide variety of art classes and camps for children and adult students at the Multnomah Art Center. She studied the art of encaustic painting with Jef Gunn at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, from 2005 to 2010.

Dana moved to Port Townsend with her husband, Brian, in August of 2010 and began teaching art to K-6 students at Swan School that same year. In 2017, Dana also became the art specialist at The Island School, an independent, K-5 school on Bainbridge Island. She is passionate about supporting her students as they explore creativity, art history and visual culture.

When she is not teaching or creating art, Dana loves to explore the Pacific Northwest, in both urban and wild environments.
