Artist’s Statement

As I explore the techniques and methods of encaustic collage, I find that I am also exploring the construction of the spiritual self. When beginning a new collage, I find myself gathering and interpreting symbols, fusing layer upon layer of content within the literal layers of beeswax, resin and pigment. Working with fragments of handwriting, portions of a drawing, or pieces of wing and bone, I enjoy searching for unity among a collection of broken and forgotten things.

My gallery of work grows, and I can trace the common themes of wilderness, homeland, and heritage through each series I create. I am inspired by the tensions between permanence and fragility, nature and civilization, family history and the individual spirit. I hope to evoke moments of stillness and self-recognition, offering a vision of life that both celebrates and laments the endless cycles of birth, death, and transformation.
